London Gray Finish

I've read several referances to 'London Gray' finish on Colts. I hate to sound dumb, it's a natural condition, but what exactly is it?
The first step of becoming a good shooter is knowing which end the bullet comes out of and being on the other end.

Thanks, JB. Looks like it could be simulated by fine glass bead blasting. I did that with a brass framed Wells Fargo cylinder. Looks good and holds oil better. When blued, gives a dark, satin finish even with cold blue. Can I add a well, duh, to the previous sentence? It said rather plainly, a lightly bead blasted finish...
