Just a quick question concerning the long range matches this year.  Does anyone know the distance for target placement?  I rather not bring a 1000 yard gun to the range as I have several good 5 to 600 yard rifles I'd like to shoot if the targets are in the 200 to 400 yard range.  H&R Officer's model  45-70 and a Shiloh 74 Military rifle  50-70 would be put to use.  About how many rounds should I bring to shoot the long range matches?  Also, can one come early and stay late on the club grounds?

PB, You will not need a 1000 yard gun. Have forgotten the distance but more like less than 500. I don't shoot it so some one will need to let you know the amount of ammo needed. The grounds are open for camping modern and period correct, two different locations. The range closes in the evening. But can sit around the campfire or picnic tables and talk to when ever. There are portta johns and even showers on the grounds. There will be meals on the days of events. Lots of motels and eating places within a few minutes. Come and have a good time. Tj

As I recall, the longest distance last year was in the 200-yard range. It was shot with everything from big bore single shots to pistol caliber lever guns (each in their own class of course). It's really much more of a short midrange shoot than a true "long range" match, but that's what we call it nonetheless.
Hope this helps.

The 09 "Long Distance" match was held with three volleys:

1)  Standing (unrested) at 100 yards
2)  Kneeling at 150 yards
3)  Sitting w/ a bench rest at 200 yards.

While West Side is a beautiful and well groomed range, I don't believe they have any long distance bays longer than 200 yards.

With these relatively short distances, you can score well with carbine length long arms.  I think the "ideal" rifle for this range is a Sharps carbine or an '86 SRC.  Last time I ran the course, I was shooting my 13lb Browning Hi Wall BPCR rifle (30" barrel).  Not a great choice to shoot from an unrested standing position.

Could someone post more information about the national shoot.

Dates, directions.

Is the public invited or only NCOWS members?

Schedule of events.

Any info would be appreciated. I am planning to attend for the first time and I would like to have some idea of what to expect.

June 8-11, NCOWS National Shoot, Westside Sportsmen's Club, Evansville, IN.

Public is always welcome, but must be an NCOWS member to compete.

The hosting posse has not posted the details yet, but on our www.ncows.org is a nice report of last years National, same place.
I would imagine the format will be the same this year.

To quote our Marshall, Irish Dave:

"Hotels: The Holiday Inn Express is the closest, but also a bit pricier than some others in the area. There has been a special rate in the past and I suspect there will be again. Match Director Duke Henry aka Rob Hansen will know for sure about this.

Dates: June 8-11.

Schedule: Primary things are Long Range = Wednesday; Side Matches = Thursday; Mains = Friday and Saturday; Banquet = Saturday night. Sunday is a travel day."

Cost if I remember right was around $100.00, but someone will likely jump in and provide some more details.
