TenWolves, thanks for the tip on beeswax, I'll give that a try.

rrick, I always thouroughly wet my leather, then groove the stitching line, punch the holes, fold it over, sew it and block it, all at one setting. To punch the holes in dry leather is almost impossible (99% of what I do is with 12-13 oz skirting leather). Also, keeping the prongs sharp on the punch helps me tremendously.
There's no stoppin' a man who knows he's right and just keeps on comin'.

You guys have mastered the technique with the 4 pronger it seems.

I usually glue seams with barge cement just before I start sewing, so wetting it at that point in time would be bad.

I've never tried wax. but I might try it tonight and see what happens.

Does anyone but me use a diamond sided stitching awl, or am I in the major minority ?

Marshal Will Wingam

rickk, I always use a diamond stitch awl and usually use a stitch wheel to mark the spacing. Every few stitches I poke the beeswax with the awl so it goes easily through the leather. Before I start, I strop my awl to make sure the edges are sharp. I never used the multiple punches except the flat ones for lacing.

Well Marshall Will, looks like you and I will have to drink alone at the far end of the bar with our diamond stitch awls and stitching wheels. Yes, I run my awl over a flat stone before each project.

I do have a 4 hole tubular punch that uses 4 replaceable tubes that is great for making bigger sized holes for lacing. I typically move it up three holes at a time, leaving one tube in a previous hole to keep proper spacing.

Real good but the thread tension thing is a night mare.  :-[

Duke,

Get ahold of Steve to get the tension set....I have had my Ferdco Pro-2000 for almost 5 years now and have never had to re-adjust the bobbin tension...once you have it set it should stay set

When Steve was here at my house it loosened it up. Now the the bobbin thread pulls through. It need to be tightend back up I'm just real busy on other projects.
