A quick quesstion on vinegaroon.  I've seen some use the metal shavings and others have used steel wool.  I find the whole vinegaroon thing interesting and would like to mix up a batch and try it.  I'm wondering - with the hassle of having to "de-oil" the steel wool and if a person doesn't have access to steel shavings - has anyone ever tried using say a pound of "common" nails - like a pound of 8d common or such?  They'd be easier to wipe down with alcohol to take any oil off.  I was thinking of getting a couple of gallons of the vinegar and finding a container that would hold that quantity and then just dumping in a pound or two of common nails.  Every so often, shake the container and then after a few weeks, pouring it in a large pan or tin foil pan like you get to cook turkeys in the overn - laying the leaqther in and when done, just pouring the vinegaroon back in to the container until the next time.  I'm just curious if anyone has used nails and if it would work the same?   Thanks.   :)

I stay away from steel wool, I tried it but had smoke all over, not for me, I find iron shavings work the best, but nails will work also, pick a nail that is iron only, you don't want any mixture, and no platting of any kind, if it will hold well with a magnet then it has a good amount of iron and you want it to be able to rust also, so you're good to go.follow the instruction in the FAQ/HOW TO thread, when making mine, after heating on the stove, as it cures, I keep it in a large GLASS jar, like you make sun tea in or pickled pigs feet come in, you get the idea, after heating your cider vinegar and iron, let it cool, then pour it in the glass jar, don't put the lid on too tight, then every day for two weeks shake the jar up a little to agitate the liquid after two weeks the iron should be gone, if you still have a strong vinegar smell just add more iron, don't be afraid of using too much iron, but go easy until you get the hang of it. after it is done, I like to keep mine in large kitty litter jugs, and that's how I store it, with a tight lid at that point. when I do my dyeing, I use plastic storage containers, and pour what I need in that, do your dyeing , follow procedure and you'll be very happy with the results, pour the unused vinegaroon back in your storing container for use the next time.

Thanks Ten Wolves - much appreciate the info.  I didn't think about using plastic storage containers for the dying - they would work great - easily cleaned and reusable.  Now to gatheer the supplies and get my "still" going!   ;D

10W,
Funny that you mention not to put the lid on too tight. I have mine with steel wool, degreased, and just packed it into the cider vinegar gallon jug. Then I stuck the lid on tight...... ;)

I went back out later in the evening, and I had a wobbly balloon looking jug. Its better now that I loosened the cap up.

Are you going to add this post to the FAQ eventually? Good info.

Hey Dalton - I'm glad he mentioned that little ditty as well about leaving the top loose.  My wife is really good about putting up with the things I do and try . . .  BUT . . . I don't think she'd be too happy with me to go out in the garagein the morning to find "vinegaroon" decorating everything around it . . .  I have a feeling there wouldn't be a doghouse big enough!   ;D  Kind of reminds me of when we got married.  My Dad arranged for a bottle of "bubbly" to be delivered to the room at the hotel we were staying at.  We drank a portion of it, I corked the remainder and put it in the NEW SUITCASE SHE HAD GIVEN TO ME as a wedding present (I couldn't see if going to waste).  I put the suitcase in the car trunk and off we went to the airport so see some friends off.  All of a sudden, I smelled something that resembled a "brewery". Yep - the bottle exploded in the suitcase - ruined the suitcase, my clothes and almost the remainder of the honeymoon! That was my "first sleepover" in the doghouse.   ;D

I got mine Friday and was glad to get them. Will get them to soaking next week. Just thought I would thank you publicly for them.
Thanks again,
Texas Toby :)

Would it be possible to get shavings from a local metal shop where they have laths and drills and such? There are a couple not too far from me.Use to hang around them places when i was younger as my grandfather had saw blade buissness next door.Ever once and awhile they make something for me and i see shavings all over the place.Broke a knife blade once and one of the fellas ther fixed it right up reshaping it,cost me a twelve pack :)

Gunclickrick,
Yes it is.  The cold roll stock is better as it is a cheaper and softer grade of steel.  The better steels, such as 4140 or the heat treatable steels take longer to rust as their compounds are made up more of the copper, tins and leads.  If you'd like, my offer still stands...I already have several small containers made up  and ready to mail if you prefer.  I've sent them to Calif, Kansas and Texas. Not a problem and they are just suited for this purpose.  They are fine cut of shavings that I specifically did for vinegarooning.  Really thought there would be more pards that wanted them.  Anyways,  they are still available and they work for several batches instead of just one as a piece of steel wool would.  Semper-fi   MIke
