(Hope this is the right area to ask this.)

How and by whom were Burnisde rifles and carbines used during the ACW?

Thank you.
Knowledge is to be shared not hoarded.

Major 2

After the Sharps Carbine & Spencer the Burnside was the 3rd most purchased Union Cavalry long arm
Mostly 4th models, in numbers about 49,000-50,000, some (far fewer) 3rd models also saw service 4500 or so.
It used unique cone shaped fixed cartridge the breach tipped up and was loaded from the front of the breach.
The cartridge case a had a gas ring to seal the Rather wide gap between the breach and barrel.
It looked something akin to a ice cream cone w/ conical lead ice cream.

They were light and handy on Horse back, but often ( with no ejector ) one might have to pry the spent shell out.
Spent shells & even loaded rounds have been found in encampment sites & battlefields.
We found one at Manassas , while building a film set for the new interpretive film "Manassas  End of Innocents"
I was with some rangers so it was given to them.
when planets align...do the deal !
