I've been working the bugs out of my Springfield Spencer rifle, I an quit happy with everything, good cartridge feed, centerfire block easy fit. Brass Starline 56-50. works great. The one problem that I noticed was that the Stabler cutoff would loosen up, when I removed it to look for the problem, I noticed that it was different, it was the solid looking one (1860) and not the grooved one that I thought belonged on this type of rifle. The Spencer Springfield 1871 rifle used the Burnside Stabler, if this is correct than I need to locate the right Stabler, Does anyone have one that they might want to sell, or know where I would be able to find one.

My first Range outing proved to be a success, sighted in a 100 yds, and then went over the 200 yd and was able to hit a couple of silhouettes. With a little more time on this rifle, I'm going to start shooting against those Sharps Shooters.

Thanks

S&S youse to have booth Spencer & Springfield cutt offs, you will find that with the right load this model is capable of acuracy that is as good or better than the 50-70 chamberd Sharps or Springfield rifles out to 400yds,what is the bullet and load you are yousing, with this rifle yousing a shorter lighter bullet and as much powder as you can (at least 40gr of FF swis) is were you will get your best acuracy, for a bullet try the Lyman515139D if you can get hold of some,a good BP lube is also very important for acuracy

Herbert, Thanks for the info, I will contact them first thing Monday to see what they have, My first outing I shoot 38 gr of 3f Goex. Probably first time this rifle shot in over 100 yrs. so I was little cautious. My next load will be 44 gr. My bullet happens to be 515139. A shooting friend of mine who just picked up a Spencer ( Burnside 1865 ) last week is also working on cartridge load, between the both of us, we will get these rifles to compete with the Sharps.

Thanks

your friends Spencer Burncide if a original carbine has a faster twist and larger bore genrally .520 to 525 it will shoot much better with a Buffalow Arms JIM 520-375 bullet or even better a NEI hand tools 525 spencer bullet,I have a Burncide Spencer carbine and it loves this bullet with 40gr FF Swiss, because your Springfield has a 1 in 42 twist the shorter Lyman bullet should work well if it fits the bore properly and you should be able to squeese a bit more velocity out of it,with your rifle I calculated the velocitys you will need for best acuracy for a given bullet lenth ,puting your groove diamater at .515 the Lyman 515-139D bullet at .725 long will work best at 1076 fps if you want to go to the longer .775 Buffalow arms bullet you will have to increase velocity to 1230 fps for best stability, your friends carbine will need the .775 long .520 bullet at 746fps for best stability, these are genral figers and you can genrall go a little lower or higher before acuracy id affected
