Any of you fellows have any experience making paper or linen cartridges for rifles?Type of paper, how to make the nitrate solution(one guy posted somewhere about using "Stump Rot").Not interested in using those factory kits, the paper is so thin they lack durability in handling.Like to make some out of a cotton or linen based paper for a Sharps percussion.

If you go to Youtube there many great "how to" vids.  ;)

I tried making paper ones once. It seemed to be a lot of work, but to each his own.

Anyway, "Grant's Stump Remover" is pretty much 100% Potassium Nitrate.  It comes in 1# containers for about 6 bucks or so. There are cheaper sources (a buck a pound) but if you just want some to make paper cartridges Stump Remover is an easy way to get some at the local hardware store.

Be aware that there are other brands of stump remover. They aren't all made from Potassium Nitrate, so some label reading is in order.

JimBob,  Choose your paper carefully. A thin rag vellum should suffice. It should be sufficiently durable after soaking in potassium nitrate as long as you allow sufficient drying time. You will also need to brush off the excess PN. Used to do this years ago  and it worked great. If you are planning on longrange (500-600 yds)accuracy, you may want to use paper patched bullets. They are easy to make but are time consuming.

Thank you all.

Kid-I'll have to check it out, love how to videos on doing odd things.Work smarter not harder.

rickk-LOL I'm retired, time and space have no meaning. Thanks for the tip on the stump remover.

Capt. Montgomery-No long range stuff for me,it's a carbine and my eyes ain't that good anymore.I've had a little experience with PP bullets.I came to the conclusion I would be dead before I was a success at it. ;D Have the right mold I need from Rapine for tying on the paper cartridges. Thanks for the paper hint,I'll add that one to the list to try.

Grapeshot

Listen!  Do you hear that?  The roar of Cannons and the screams of the dying.  Ahh!  Music to my ears.
