Uberti, 45-75 brass, Lee dies, etc.

Got a few rounds fired, bought some more "toys", and trying to move forward.  These are things I've learned and need some input on:

1) The sideplate screw seems to have been put in "beneath the surface" of the plate itself, so  I can't get a screwdriver to work it.

2) The tiny screw in the tang for the mounting of a sight does "break", unscrew, etc, but you can screw it in until it literally falls out the bottom of the hole.  As  I have never dealt with such a screw before, is this correct?

3) The wood screw from the lower tang into the buttstock tightens, but never "bottoms" into its hole.  Like a longer screw was used to make the hole into the stock, now this one never reaches bottom.  It's tight enough, and secure, but will continue to rotate.

4) I have a set of Lee 45-75 dies that I purchased a couple months back.  Used today to resize/deprime the cases I have fired. (45-75 BP rounds from BACO).  It took a good amount of force to get the cases resized, but the cases would push the de-priming pin up into the die, instead of it decapping.  What is the correction of this?  (I could tap the pin back down with the case in it, and it would deprime.)

I now have the deprimed cases tumbling.  Any and all observations, suggestions, etc, would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Hugh

1. You will have to find a screwdriver that fits the slot exactly.  I have a set of Brownells Magna-tip screwdrivers and there is one that fiits the slot perfectly.

2.  The forward tang sight screw will screw all the way through the tang.  It's basically there to fill the hole until you put a tang sight on.  I put a Marbles tang sight on and the screw tightens up just fine.

3.  I have had that screw out to remove the buttstock but I don't recall checking the deapth of the hole.  The screw in mine snugs up just fine.

4.  I am not familiar with Lee dies.  I have a set of RCBS Heritage .45-75 dies and with case lube they work easily.  You might give Lee a call about the decaping pin problem.  It sounds like something isn't tight.

I almost forgot.  Did you ever determine if your gun is chambered for .45-75 WCF or .45-75 UCF?

Cimarron,
A pard on here is sending me one of his pre-rechambering, and one post-chambering to WCF.  Should be here Monday or Tues.  I'm leaving one of the rounds I fired un-resiized, etc.  To compare when they arrive.  Will also call Lee Monday.

Thanks.

hhughh,

A quick way to tell about your chamber would be to compare one of your fired rounds with one of your unfired rounds.  If the neck on the fired round is about .200" shorter (the bottle neck sholder will have moved up that same .200") then you have a UCF.  Not a bad thing but it may explain the hard resizing, especially if the die is having to push the sholder back that 2/10".  Good luck.

Hold the die body by the flats at the op with a 3/4" open end wrench and tighten the collet that the pin slides up and down in with a 1/2" box end wrench.
