I made a "West Texas" holster for my New Vaquerro from Will Ghormley's patterns and I like it so much, I want to make one for my 1858 Remington which I purchased from Cabellas.  My Remington is their 1858 "New Army Police" in 36 caliber with a 6 1/2" barrel - made by Pietta.  My question is this - I'm in AZ for the winter and the pistol is in Michigan.  My understanding is that the frame, etc. on the Pietta 1858 New Army Remington .44 with the 8" barrel is the same as the one used to make the ".36 NA Police" like I have.  That being the case (if it is) I am thinking that I can shorten the pattern for the bucket on Will's pattern for the .44 NA Remington with an 8" barrel by a 1 1/2" to accomodate the shorter barrel length on the .36 NA "Police" that I have.  Is there anybody out there who has used/adapted this pattern for the .36 NA Remmie Pietta "Police"?   In theory, it should work O.K. but would appreciate hearing from anyone who has done it in case there needs to be an alteration to the pattern besides shortening the bucket for the shorter barrel length.  Thanks.   :)

I've got the same gun and I can say that it fits nicely in the holster Cabela's sells for 1858 Remingtons...so at least in that case, a holster made for the 44 cal 1858 works just fine for the 36 as well.....of course the barrel doesn't fill it all the way - but it's better than the holster being too short  ;D

Yep, I just tried it in my custom holsters and my 36Rem fits right in both the 8" and 5 1/2"  Rem58 44cal holsters just like they were made for the 36cal (except barrel length ;D).... rentenion straps lined up too.

Thanks pards for the information - it's greatly appreciated.  I was pretty sure that the Pietta .44 and the .36 Remmi was the same frame size.  Knowing that, it won't be a problem to shorten the bucket of the holster to accomodate the shorter barrell length of the .36 Remmie.  Thanks much again!   :)

BBB, I'm going to go one step further.  I like to keep my personal inventory down to as few rigs as possible so guns must learn to share around here!  I find that if I use an old model Vaq size pattern, it will work passably well for half of my guns.  The SAA size, and the Rems all seem relatively happy there, just keep the transition from the frame to the barl a bit full when pattern making.  Of the several holsters I have made with WGs patterns all have worked well in this respect.
