Can the soft smooth leather purses and jackets I see at thrift stores be used as lining material for holsters? They sometimes go ignored and unsold. Is there a risk of gun corrosion from the tanning methods used for leather clothing if the leather is sealed when finished? Thanks, Don

Dalton Masterson

I think I remember a thread concerning this before. If I recall, chrome tanned leather was very hard on guns. It was not suggested to use old unknown leather sources due to this.
One of the other guys will chime in I am sure...(please :'()

Thanks for your reply. I was concerned about that. I wonder if a sealant would work on salvaged leather though, or some sort of (please don't laugh) laundering before use. Don

I agree with Dalton...alot of garment and upholstery leather is chrome tanned and over time may mess up the finish on a gun.  I would personally stay away from any leather where I didn't know what it was tanned with.

Tallbald, Welcome to our forum pard, Dalton and Outrider gave you good advice, and I'm in total agreement with them, stay with Veg-Tanned leather for your gun leather needs and you won't have any issues that unknown leather can present .

+2 or 3 or 4 whatever it is. Use that leather for some other project. No sense in taking a chance.

Thanks all. It would be a shame to put my heart into a project only to have it consume my revolver in the end. Don
