Question about leather stuff

I always wondered when i go to thrift stores and such which i do a couple times a week,i always find old mink coates,regular leather coats,different fur coats and such.Most of the time there will be a tear somewhere or just doesn't sale and is marked way down.Is there anything that can be done with old minks and such?I know sometimes the old leather can be brittle,but most of the time they seem real nice and pliable....To thin ya think?

I have a friend who uses suede jackets for all kinds of buckskinning type items.  He sells them to guys starting shooting, or people who don't require the authentic brain-tan leather.  I also lurk on a paleo board and plenty of those crafters use furs from thrift shops for cloaks, quivers, etc.
