belt knife

I forged this knife from a piece of steel , not for shure was it is.Thought I might show you i still kicking.

Handle -Osage flamed toasted
Finish- Linseed oil while the wood was still hot from toasting Then two thin coats of tru oil
ferrul- solder
Blade- high carbon

Handy looking knife James!  Did you pour the bolster?  I need to give that a try.  What kind of metal do you use for your poured bolsters?.   Your treatment of the osage gives it a rich color.  Good job all around!

This knife is probably much closer to the size knife carried during the 1880s on ... once cartridges made pistols pretty dependable, there was no longer any need for that 2-3 lbs of knfe to be hanging from the belt .... and unless one was butchering bison and other large animals, there was no longer any need for a huge knife.

So your lovely knife is probably far closer to a carrying knife during the cartridge era than those big bruisers we see at shoots ...
