I've been using Unique and Trail Boss for several years. I don't get the muzzle velocity I want with TB and Unique is really dirty. Any recommendations for a good hard shooting powder?
Yes, I do have more facial hair now.

Jefro

Red Dot, I use it for all my smokeless, .38, 44/40, .45, 12ga. Another popular clean burning powder from Alliant is American Select. Good Luck

44-40 takes a back seat to no other caliber

I have found Clays to burn fairly clean ;D
I only shoot to support my reloading habit.

TomBullweed

Titegroup (16.6 grains, two .7 cc spoons)
1oz of shot
Win SL wad
Remington green hull
1075 fps and clean

Pit Mule

I've used all of the above. Vihtavuori N320 is the cleanest burning powder I've found yet.

Clays or Red Dot.  And even with those, cleaner loads come from the top end of the recommended range.  Those from the low end of the pressure scale, with almost any powder, don't usually obturate the case mouth quickly enough (except possibly for brass with a thin mouth, a la .44 WCF), and you get dirty loads as consequence.  If you're using light loads of TB, you could just try moving up the scale.  If you're using really light loads and want to continue that, I doubt just changing powders will make much difference for you.

I actually compared 12-14 different powders and various charge weights, some 10 years ago or so...

While I use the same load for SASS and for hunting or messing around, I want at least 900 fps out of my revolvers. I don't use a rifle in .45 Colt for hunting anymore, I picked up a .38-55 which I consider a much better rifle round.

What caliber are we talking about?
what velocity are you looking for?
what weight bullet are you shooting?

I used to use Clays, but had a lot of variation in velocity.  The variation became distracting -- one round would go bang, next would go boom, next would go poof.  Not conducive to concentration or speed.

I switched to Titegroup and have been very happy with it.  The majority of cowboys I shoot with use and like Titegroup.  It goes bang the same on cold days as it does in the 100 degree, Summer heat.  Very consistent.  Not subject to position sensitivity or temperature variation.   The only problem with it is that it is not the least expensive solution for action shooting.  But, it goes a long way.

OK, given you're not trying to be down at the low pressure end of recommended loads...  then I can say Clays, Red Dot, Titegroup, VV N3xx (there are several in this VV series), and H110/W296 might be worth a look, depending on your caliber, cartridge case, bullet weight, etc.  Not sure all of those would be recommended for your particular cartridge, but they do burn relatively cleanly in the right circumstances.  Probably some others out there, too... but these are the one's I'm specifically familiar with.

Accurate #5 and #7 might suit, too, but I can't remember how cleanly those burned...
