Delmonico

The paint of that time was often simply boiled linseed oil with pigment added to it.

The time has passed so quick, the years all run together now.

Delmonico - depends on if it were simply unboiled linseed oil and pigment for exteriors such as homes & barns. There is the period recipe I posted in a separate thread that contains boiled linseed oil, rosin and beewax for proper waterproofing paint for fabric. Though a mix of linseed oil and pigment would repel water, I know through firsthand use of the linseed oil/rosin/beewax paint that water is shed as if it were not paint but vulcanized rubber. The larger question is, what would have been available at any given time fr a fellow to paint a such a coat. I should think that the latter waterproofing paint would have been preferred.

I still have an original TOWER BRAND made in the 1930' or 40's. It has a red wool collar. Before the imports got going strong my family was in the old west clothes business. I copied this slicker, made patterns from it, had seamtresses make the thing and I experimented with coatings. No interenet then so I was on my own. I used the orange shellac and linseed oil, putting the oil on the canvas first then coating it with shellac. The oil would keep the slicker flexible. It looked and felt like the original. Last was to sew on the wool collar lining. Later I loaned the original to a guy who had a upholstery shop and he was going to copy it, that inbred idiot cut it at the seams so now it is in a box.  I wore the original on rainy rides,  but when it's hot they don't breath even, when it's cold they crack, when a branch hits you it can poke a hole in it, plus the seams leaked. Later I found CNL (Lindimier) Clothier and sold their product.

Howdy,

A Talma, would fit very well with my personna (post CW era and before 1880).
I've been  looking on the jarnagin co web site.It seems there is no more raingear available for sale?.
I've made some research. The sutlers i've found had only ponchos.
Do you know some sutler who could have Talmas?

Thanks.
