Using Pyrodex

I have been wanting to try blackpowder,I have molds for 200 and 250 grain big lube bullets and I have cast a 30 caliber ammo can nearly fulll. I haven't bought any powder yet.  I was wondering about Pyrodex.  A local chain store has the ctg grade for about $12 a pound with discount including tax.  The upside to it is bulk (less used than real blackpowder) and I can easily buy it.  I have heard negative comments about being extremely corrosive (worse than blackpowder) and coroding guns and brass real bad.

Any comments from  those that have used or are using it?   How is it in shotgun loads?

Thanks

Pard,

If yer local dealer has Cartridge grade Pyrodex, make him give you MAJOR discount on it! Pyrodex discontinued Cartridge Grade quite a few years back! So that stuff has been setting on his shelves fer a LOOOONNNNGGG time!

Oh yeah.... catridge grade Pyro is jist fine fer CAS shootin! ;D I've used it in my .45s with excellant results. Is it more corrosive than real BP? I really couldn't tell any difference, but then I'm one of those fanatics that put my brass in a jar of weasel piss right at the range and clean my guns twice every time I shoot em!

....and it werks great in scattergun shells too! :D

Thanks Cuts Crooked, I was trying to remeber exactly which one, it has a gold or yellow label on the bottle, I think.  It might be pistol rifle grade???

Thanks for the reply

Pyrodex rusts guns.  Once that is taken into account, it's ok.  Just don't put off cleaning and a day or so later, cleaning again, and you'll be ok with it.

Deer Creek in Waldron IN has the best prices I've found anywhere on the Genuine Powder, should you get interested.  Figure around $8 per pound delivered to  your hands.

Wouldn't worry much about it, MG.  Load it, shoot it 'n clean it like ya would the real stuff.

I been shootin' RS and I singled out one old pistol ta test.  The report I have going details each use and cleaning technique.  I'll post it after the third Saturday when I plan on using the pistol next.

Make a reasonable effort at cleanin' 'em and you'll be just fine.

Is there a phone for the place in Waldron Indiana?  Do you have to buy 10 or 25 pound lots?  I checked a map and I am little over an hour away from there.

Thanks

I really hated the clean up of Pyrodex.  I think it took longer then with real BP.

Tried both powder and pellets in cartridges.  The powder was fine but the pellets (.44 30gr equivalent) made one heck of a bang.

Went to Triple 7 and really like the stuff.

I love pyrodex in cartridges.  The R/S grade woorks just fine for me and the P grade works just as well.  Have to use a BP Lube or the fouling gets mighty hard.

Have been using the pellets in my .44WCF for my Yellowboy Carbine and it works great.  I fill up the hole in the center with P grade and drop a card wad in under the bullet and she shoots just fine.

What DD said.  Tried it ONCE -- that's ONCE.  Back to the REAL stuff and am sticking to it.

Pyrodex is an excellent BP. In my extensive experience only 777, Swiss and Wano perform better. It does need the same large amounts of lube and soft bullets as Goex, Elefant, Swiss and Wano and, like with using them, the guns need to be cleaned throughly at the end of each day. It produces much less powder crud than Goex and Elefant, so, one needs much less lube with it, even most one-lube-groove bullets carry enough for rifles.

Never had a problem with corrosion when using Pyrodex, never need exotic cleaning methods or lubes. Because the bullets need plently of lube, clean-up fluid needs to be hot and some soap or detergent to get the residual lube out. When at multiday matches away from home I use regular Windex for cleaning.

When I helped start up our club in 91, it was Pyrodex CTG in everything.  CTG got scarce and it was RS for everything.  Found a source for Goex at $11 per pound while Pyro went up to over $20 per pound.  Well, 2f works great in everything.  ;)

Oh, never had any more problems with corrosion with Pyro than I did with Goex.  Cleaned them up the same.  Hot water/Murphy's Oil Soap, hot water rinse and Ballistol to lube.  Before Ballistol it was WD-40.  Never had any problems with WD-40 either. :)
