I have 16oz of Pyrodex I was thinkin bout loadin. I have had it for a couple a few years. I got ta checkin on stuff and I find the only bullits I got are 255 gr BEAR CREEK MOLY COATED. Will these be OK, or should I hold off till I get some SPG or???????
Please advise.

Donno about Moly coatings, sorry! But I'd hold off until I had sum SPG or make up a batch of 50/50 lube...the more the better!

Drifter,

I know you didn't mean to keep us in the dark but what are ya loadin'?  My guess is 45LC.  Moly coated boolits make me think they are copper clad.  I don't think moly sticks worth a damn to lead.  My advice (send check for $.02) is go with a soft 20:1. 30:1 boolits.  The lube wagon type will do the job.  Lube with 50% beeswax (you can make up the rest) 50% what ever suits yer fancy.  My personal (don't tell anyone) mix is 50% beeswax, 30% shorting, 20% paraffin or soy wax.  To that I add my secret sauce (don't ask).   If you felt like adding some moly to yer mix go right ahead.  Look for a snot star at the muzzle to know if ya got enough lube.

Howdy Vern,
you can get away with regular smokeless lube and pyrodex. I tried it a long time ago and what I found was some fouling built up towards the muzzle ends. It will clean up with a little extra effort. If you are just going to shoot BP for a match or so to try it out, then use your same old bullets. If you are going to shoot BP steady, then do as the others suggest and use a BP lube of some sort. Be aware pyrodex will corrode and pit if left in your guns for a period after shooting. True BP and about all the other subs seems to be gentler on metal, but cleaning as soon as you can after shooting is a good practice. I started out BP shooting with pyrodex and had good luck using wonder wads in C&B and felt wads in shotgun. Have fun with it pard :)

Hey there Foothills, Some pards down this way use molly coated bullits with black powder and use a milk carton wad and a dab of BORE BUTTER on  back of bullit and work fine.

Shot up a bunch of moly-lubed Pb alloy bullets in a 45 Colt Ruger years ago with Pyrodex-P. Just handlubed them with BoreButter, Crisco, etc. Absolutely no problems in the revolver. Doubt there was enough lube for rifle barrel.

I've been shootin' moly-coat for over 8 years now.  I take a batch of bullets, put them in a plastic margarine container along with a dollop of liquid ALOX lube.  Put the cover on and shake vigorously to coat the bullets. (The noise scares the heck out of the cats).  Spread them out on wax paper for a while to dry, put 'em back in the box 'til needed.  Been workin' just fine.

Got me a lot to learn, no doubt.  One of the great things about this game is ya get ta play around with stuff.

Decided I was gonna load me some round balls cast for the front stuffers inta a metallic case.  Was gonna shoot 'em out the R&M conversion.  Figgered I'd load the Navy 'n lube it up then load the R&M 'n lube the face of the cylinder.  Well, I went 'n found someone wantin' the R&M more'n I did 'n I sold it.......

Ennyways, I weren't gonna grease up my clones.  What I done was charge a case then seat a fiber wad over the powder.  Used one ah them Cajon Injectors to squirt in a good amount of Crisco then seat the ball on top ah that.

Had my doubts.  Shot a cylinder full at one shoot.  Shot two cylinders full another.  Used 'em the whole six stages last shoot 'n the gun cleaned right up.

I got SPG lubed stuff for the next shoot.  It's good 'n hot here now 'n I suspect that Crisco would turn ta salad oil in the heat.  It was an interestin' experiment.  Come fall I'll do sum more tinkerin' wit 'em.

I ain't gonna shoot this stuff out of me 'blue' Vaqueros, I'm gonna use my stainless ones, thought they might clean up easer.

If SB357 passes....I'm gonna be shootin cap & ball  :o

Howdy Vern. Experimenting is half the fun of shooting BP as you will find out. If you like the pyrodex effect, get some APP ( American Pioneer) and lube problems get very small. I actually shot a match with unlubed bullets. I thought I had coated them with liquid alox, but got the batches of bullets mixed up and to my surprise, no leading and they cleaned right up too. That is for rifle and pistol. I don't recommend screw ups, but sometimes they work out. I am shooting the new Goex Pinnacle right now and in two matches it is just fine. It really is just black colored APP in a different jar.

SB357 better not pass, but just in case I am checking out muzzleloaders and front stuffing shotguns. If it should ever pass, I will need to jump onto muzzle loading before the prices go sky high. CAS will be history for us, but we could all get together at rendevous. I still have a Davy Crockett coonskin hat somewhere. Let's all do our part to make sure SB357 doesn't make it past the governator.
