Last weekend I ran into Ron Norton at the reenactment at Cedar Creek. While discussing various aspects of the ArmiSport Spencer, I told him I bought a 45 Schofield because it was SASS legal ammo. He told me that the 56-50 Spencer was SASS legal as well. He said an exeception was made for the 56-50s.

While I don't not believe him, can anybody confirm this? I haven't seen this in any SASS rule book.

Oh, and by the way, he also mentioned that Armi was going to be making 150th CW versions each year - and that a '63 Spencer was possible for 2013. If true, I will be saving my pennies.

From the SASS handbook is the following.

• Must be in a caliber commonly available in revolvers. Examples include, but are not limited
to, .32-20, .32 Magnum, .357 Magnum, .38 Special, .38-40, .44-40, .44 Special, .44
Magnum, and .45 Colt. The only allowed exceptions are the .25-20 and .56-50. No rifle
calibers such as .30-30 or .38-55 are allowed.

Yep, Sean Thornton has it right, for both Main Matches and Long Range Matches.

I shoot my 56-50 in a match ever' now and again, and my best stage time so far is 71.55, clean. In all fairness, it was a 10-10-2 stage instead of 10-10-4 though. Whenever I break 100 seconds, I'm pretty pleased with myself. I had a club president last year tell me I couldn't use it as a main match rifle, so I pulled my little ol' SASS rule book outta my gun cart and showed him the above paragraph. He was amazed, and I was amazed he was amazed - you would think he would have read through the book at least once by now.

I use mine in both the main match and our local "Cody-Dixon" (6 shots at 75 to 100yds) match.  I have used my Blakslee loader for an on the clock reload.

OK - you all have convinced me to go out and buy a 56-50 for both reenacting and my regular SASS matches
-

Now, anybody want to buy a .45 Schofield Spencer with a bunch of brass and .452 bullets?
