Hello all!

New to the forum. I'm searching for .45-60 loads, mainly for trailboss. I've been told this is the best place to find it. I've searched a bit, and found a few tidbits, but most of it seems a few years old.

My father picked up an 1876 repro a few months back. He is paralyzed on the left side due to a stroke, and can not shoot or reload on his own. I do some reloading on the side (.38/.357, .45ACP, 9mm, .223, .50BMG, etc), and picked up .45-60 dies so I can load him some ammo. I picked up a box of TenX for his birthday, but am nobt regularly going to spend that much. lol..

I have a 5 pound container of Trailboss, and would like to put it to use. I've heard it works pretty well in the .45-60. I'd be interested in hearing what kind of loads have worked well. I'd also  be interested in hearing if anyone uses jacketed ammo in the .45-60, as that's about all I can find locally. One of these days I'll have to start casting my own lead.

Thanks again for the help!

While I don't have any specific loads for Trail Boss in the .45-60, I have loaded it with IMR 4198 with over-powder wads, using the ratio of the original BP loadings and listed smokeless data for the .45-70 as a guide.  60/70 = .85 or 85 percent.  Even with the differences in the original capacities of the old folded-head cartridges, versus modern solid head brass, the volumetric ratios should still be close.  Go to Hodgdon's site and see what they are recommending for .45-70 with 300 grain bullets and start with 85 percent of that.

Hi NAM

I own and shoot a 1876 made by Uberti in 45-60 and the loads I use in it are out the latest 49th edition of the Lyman Reloading Handbook page 103. I use a local made 300grn projectile and 13grn Trailboss. It works great.

I'm guessing that is from the .45-70 section? I checked the book, as I had heard it had .45-60, but it doesn't. (unless I missed it).

Next project is to try to find ~300gr .458 lead locally. Jacketed can be found, but no lead. I'd rather not have to mail order, as shipping is a bit steep usually.

In Lyman's #49 the 45-60 loads are in an article that I think is around page # 109.  The article is about loading the 1876 repros.

DOH! I'll have to take another look when I get back up to the store. Didn't buy it at the time, as I didn't see any loads.  Thanks!

Look for light bullets for the .45-70.
Yes, I do have more facial hair now.
