44.40 brass?

Is 44.40 brass a seasonal run?  Been looking online for some, and nobody seems to have any.

I dunno if you would call it seasonal, but I suspect some companies, particularly Winchester, only produce 44-40 brass once or twice a year, while other more popular calibers are in continual production. It's all a matter of demand, and other than CAS shooters, there isn't a whole lot of demand for 44-40, compared to much more popular calibers like 38 Special or 40 S&W.

I was just at the local shop and had an interesting conversation about this very subject. The shop keeper mentioned that he had talked to several ammo manufacturers at the SHOT show and they reported that they only produce 223 and 9mm all the time. Everything else is run in batches. They underestimated the demand for ammo after the events of last January, so ran out of just about everything but 223 and 9mm, and a lot of the wholesalers even ran out of that. Of course, that includes components as well as loaded ammo.

OMG - those folks cost twice the price of ordering directly from Starline!  I'll wait 30 days to save that kind of money - in fact I just ordered 1,000 from them.  They're supposed to be available by Feb 15th.

Sometimes you can get Star-Line off Gunbroker's for $21 per 100. Cheapest I can find on ANY New 44-40 case.

You can order direct from Starline for $166.90 per 1,000.  And that included shipping on my latest order.  I searched everywhere I could think of on the internet, and I couldn't beat Starline's own prices.  They've always been very helpful and pleasant to do business with.

Buy by the 1000 if you can.

That way (once you have got over the initial outlay) you can shoot like a millionaire and not sweat it looking for the odd case. Take them to the range in trays, but bring them home bulk, that way you will never know if you dropped one or two and can relax and concentrate on your shooting.

My sidekick, Silas McFee, bought some brass from the SASS EOT shoot.  It was supposed to be 44 Magnum, but there was other stuff in there with it.  The brass was dirty, mixed and had some dings.  I tumbled it in DD Ceramic Porcelain media, sorted it and loaded it.  I'm still using some of it.  I save it for "lost brass" matches and monthly matches that have a reputation for not returning a lot of brass.

As I recall, that brass was justifiably cheap.
