I bought some leather recently, and am wanting to try to make a holster. If I went to Dodge City in 1874-1875 and wanted
to buy a holster for my Colt revolver, what would the most popular style have been? I'm thinking the Mexican double loop,
but wanted some advice here BEFORE I start cutting. Thanks

BTB;

Flip through Packing Iron;  that should give you some inspiration.
I had Homer Brown copy the one on page 101; made by Rice in Dodge City in the mid-70s.

That early in time - a Slim Jim.

A couple years later - a Mexican Loop variant.

Rattenbury's 'Packing Iron' is a most excellent reference.

Get a copy of that before you even think of cutting.

           I made myself a Dodge City holster for my 1875's, here's a picture of one of them, the other is the same.

tEN wOLVES,

Nice job on the holster. You should go into the holster making business.

    Thanks Dead Eye Dick, your comment is appreciated pard, the Dodge City holster works well with my 1873 Colts too.

The fact is, neither my S.C. Gallup & Co. slim jim on page 89 or the R.E. Rice holster pictured on page 101, fit into the 1874-75 era.  Robert E. Rice opened the Gallup & Co. shop in Dodge City in 1878 as a branch store to their main saddlery in Pueblo.  When Rice bought out the Gallup shop in Dodge City in 1880, he then started making leather gear under his own name.  The truth is, my S. C. Gallup & Co. marked slim jim is earlier than the Rice holster.  Hope this will help.

Adios,
Buck
