I have a Uberti '73 that I would like to set up as an original.  Of course, no tang sight screw holes at all, yet.  Can anyone advise me as to the proper size and thread pitch of the two tang sight screws, and then the distance between the buttstock screw and lower sight screw, and the distance between the tang sight screws on an original Winchester?

Thanks,
Hugh

Hhowdy Hhughh,

The Lyman tang sight for the Uberti 73 provides a longer tang screw to anchor the rear of the sight base. Then you can mark, drill and tap the front screw using the sight base as a template. I'm not sure what the thread of the front sight screw is, but an email to Lyman customer service should get the info you need.

I have an original '73 rifle, SN #205,xxxB, made in 1886.

It doesn't use the tang bolt to secure the rear of the sight.  The hole spacing is about 2.15 inch.  The rear sight screw hole is centred about .48" ahead of the centre of the stock bolt.  The front sight screw is centred about .40" behind the slot for the hammer.  When erect the original Lyman sight stem has a hair more than 3 inches clearance from the rear of the dust cover when retracted, and .23" clearance from the tip of the hammer.

These measurements are "eyeballed" with a vernier caliper,  A gunsmith could likely give you more accurate measurements.  The sight hole spacing is the same as my M94 Canadian wartime rifle and my 1880's vintage M85 hi-Wall. (These rifles do use the stock bolt to secure the rear of the sight base.)  I know as I have switched sights around between them.

Thanks, Sir Charles.
That's the kind of info I was looking for.  Still need the sight screw size/pitch though.  Anyone know?

Thanks again.

What I forgot about was that the new Lyman #2 is drilled at the rear for the stock bolt.  I had to bush the hole with a ring of copper wire to fit it.  The original that I found at a gunshow had smaller holes, front & back.  Not sure about the Marbles.  I have a rear sight with windage of an unknown make that is similarly drilled with two smaller holes.
