My first handgun was an old Colt Navy, I mean an OLD Colt Navy, the real thing. I shot it a lot, right up until I got my first c'atridge revolver in about 1960-'61. Today I only shoot the cartridge guns. I do wish I still had that ol' Colt Navy. Back then they weren't worth much, especially with the shape the bluing was in and the way someone had taken the rust off the outside with what looked like a sandbklaster. Oddly, though, the bore was perfect. I had to pay quite a bit of "boot" to trade it for a then-new S&W .22-32 Kit Gun.

As much fun as I have shooting Black I wonder what my Great granddad would say about it, before he died when I was about 15 he claimed that smokeless was a great thing. So were primers with no mercury or potassium chloride.

Got a bucketfull of C&Bs  that I love to shoot, but also have R&D conversion cylinders for some. Just depends on the mood. When I go to the desert fir my semi-annual trips with my buds, I take the C&Bs. They bring their Glocks, SIGs, etc. Anybody can slam a clip home and unload downrange. I prefer to take some time and get friendly with my guns. Comment from a buddy who tried mine:  "Whoa, this is a SHOOTER!!"

PUK,

It is good to see you back on the wire, prayers do get answered daily, saw your return on the other thread you had out.

Now for C&B's, I got my first in 1972 from DGW's in Union City. Tenn, was a nice Uberti 1860 with the half fluted cylinder, still have and shoot it to date.  Now when I got into CAS about twleve years back, my first match I shot a SAA, my 1860, a Marlin 98 pump and a Rossi 92 SRC in .45......had a blast.  Since then, the spirit has gotten stronger.  Went and bought me another 60 about a year later, mixed with a few SAA's cause they're are pretty too.  Then had to get a nice pair of Uberti 51, absolutely beatiful pistols, then two more Texas Ranger model Uberti 1860's (the ones with the full fluted cyclinders.  Then to add to the fun, the kids got me a pair of the Pietta New Armies, the ones with the checlkered grips and casehard frames.....great pistols and shoot as good as they look.  And, low and behold, the boy (Marine) gave me a navy pocket pistol, 5 shot .36, great little shooter, as well

I have the oppotunity to shoot Frontiersman in all the major matches I attend, state regional and Black Powder Championships and place in just about every match I've attend with these pistols.  Now just last year, the wife, sweet giirl, got me a matches set (no. Seq.) of Ruger Old Armies, NICE.

I think I'm hooked,

Dusty, I occasionally wake up in a cold sweat thinking that if I had pressured you a little more I might be the owners of those 72 open tops.  I really wanted them.

Smokin Gun

My heart is in C&B Revs and Muzzleloading Rifles, Muskets, or Shotguns, but love everything 1899 or before and after :O) ... so I vote C&B for a days fun and reliving the Early Past of pre-war between the states, and Post Civil War frontier and Indian wars. I enjoy the time in  the field and all aspects of C&B BP shootin', loadin', Shootin', skinin' Rattlers & Jackrabbits and eatin' um...and yes i even enjoy cleanin' um that nite or the nexrt day.
But I got some old new to me cart guns  and quite a few more that I reall enjoy havin' and shootin'.

It really depends on what you're shooting for.

For fun, I shoot my C&B pistols a lot more then my Cartridge guns. I really don't need to put hundreds of rounds down range, to have fun.

But, for CAS I prefer the Cartridge guns as I have more time between stages and I'm not as rushed. My first two dozen or so CAS matches, I shot C&B pistols. Fortunately, I had built my gun cart with a high shelf for reloading my pistols on (we can load the cylinders at the cart but don't cap until we get to the loading table). Still, there was little time for much else and I was doing a lot of helping out (RO'ing, loading and unloading table,  counting) so it didn't help that it took me so long to be available. Also, if you went last in the previous stage, you were first in the next one and then everyone has to wait for YOU! Not the best way to make friends.

So, except for Frontiersman matches, the old C&B pistols are relegated to fun shooting days. And the Peacemakers are my match guns.

BTW: the only two clean matches I ever shot were shot with a miss matched pair of C&B pistols (1851 and 1860).

Cap & Ball.

It's not just a gun.

It's a loader too.  ;D
