Pietta vs Uberti Cylinders for '58 Remingtons
« on: September 17, 2010, 02:56:25 PM »
I recently bought a Pietta "58 Remington cap an' ball and also two Pietta made cylinders. My question is will the Pietta cylinders also fit and function in a Uberti '58 Remington. I have an unfinished Uberti '58 Rem kit, so trying them at this point is not possible. I haven't done any measuring yet, thought it would be simplier to try and 'glean' any info from any of you that possibly know. Might be a 'dead subject' anyway if there is a difference between hand length, bolt lock-up points, etc. between the two guns.  Has anyone ever switched cylinders between the two different manufacturers?  Didn't buy the extra cylinders with the intent of switching between the two guns, just curious.

There are differences in overall length, diameter and indeed distance from the cylinder pin to the chamber between the Uberti, Pietta, and ASM remmington cylinders, all reflectingntheir differnce in frame size and cylinder "window" dimensions. they are not interchangable.

...well, my Pa has a Uberti Revolving Carbine (it's a NM Remington C&B)...He found his R&D conversion cylinder for Pietta "1858" fits & functions perfectly with no modifications needed. Yes, there is likely some variation gun-to-gun, mfgr-to-mfgr...YMMV.

Heavens, my dear Slim, I stand corrected!
I do find it vexing when the vagaries of reality disagree with the dogma of specifications.

The Pietta cylinder is longer than the current Uberti cylinder, but is the same length as older Ubertis.  Ihave one, a 1987 Uberti with a longer cylinder, but my newer ones have a shorter cylinder.  An R&D cylinder was fitted to the older Uberti using an Uberti cylinder and Pietta backplate.

Older Piettas had a narrower cylinder locking slot and bolt head, but a new made Pietta cylinder with the wider slots and shortened about .015 will fit a current Uberti.

You just have to try them.  If you are building an Uberti kit, you may be able to lengthen the frame window and shorten the breech end of the barrel to accept a Pietta cylinder, before you assemble the kit, but then the cylinder that came with it will be too short.
