I got a DVD from the cassville shot that showed everyone shooting thru out the day, very cool.  It is a kinda still but moves forward like powerpoint..  Great, cuz you can see how people do stuff.  I noticed that oddly I hold my rifl with my left arm almost straight not with the elbow about locked, and it appears I am the only one who does.  I think I will try shortening my arm lenght back down a bit.  I am pretty good they way I hold it now when I can see the targets.. lol..  But does it make a difference?  Thanks you'all..   Deja

Using a paper target so you can really see the groups, shoot both ways. Go with the one that works.  If you change the way you're shooting allow for some time for your mind and muscles to adjust to the new position. You might have to consciously adjust each time you shoot to keep yourself from going back to the old position, if you do change.
Yes, I do have more facial hair now.

if you hold a gallon of milk out at arms length how much control will you have while pouring? while looking at those pics find a good shooter that has a build simular to yours, and look at there form. my daughter inlaw twists her hip out and nearly sets her elbow on it to steady her shot from. it works great for her but old fat guys cant get into that position.

pics are great that way, we dont always see ourselfs as others do till we see it in pics! DR

It was odd, I have never seem me shoot before, so the photos surprised me that each an every time I posed that way.  Good point about the milk carton too..  Thanks

The further out on the forearm that you hold the rifle the more support and control that you have over it.  I tended to grab the forearm too close in and had to make a conscious effort to grab it further out after it was brought to my attention by several regional and world champions.

On the other hand if you are shooting long range off hand then you can actually pull your elbow in and lock it against your body and just use your hand as a rest.

What Camille said, for SASS you want to grab further out , much better control. Check out some of Long Hunters video tips at SASS member service. So yes, you are doing it right. :D

So, my arm... the left one should be straight out?  I mean I have longggggggggggg  arms but there is only a locked elbow, not a bent one?  That is correct?  Really?  Am I doing something right in my life, or are you going to take it back?  lol

Deja,

If you get a chance to, look up Daniel Horner on the web and see how he is holding his rifle.  I know that he is shooting a black rifle, but the sport is similar.  In fact, I am now running ALL of my rifles that way, we seem to have more control over the muzzle with this type of hold.  And Yes, I do participate in 3-gun/Multi gun matches along with the Cowboy matches.

with your arm straight out and elbow locked , the only mussel groups that come into play are along the top of your shoulder and those from your wrist out. with a little bend of the elbow the bicept and forearm mussels come into play. I did not mean earlier that you should shoot locked up like a silhouette shooter.  DR
