I was watching this great John Wayne movie on TCM last night and noticed that the character "Bull" (old bearded deputy) was carrying a Root Revolving Rifle.   There were many good scenes showing it.   It was surprising what some of the property masters could pull out back in those days.   I once saw an early Bonanza where Little Joe was using a Winchester 1873 Musket model.

I recall an episode of "Bonanza" where a gunfighter gave Ben his revolver to keep for him.  It was clearly a cartridge conversion of a Dragoon.  The Root may have been a prop gun, often made of rubber.

Nope, Bull shot the church bell with it to keep the bad guys down while the good guys rushed them.

Dixie Gun Works sells a Colt Root rifle repro.  Pricey toy, though.

It had to be real then, there wern't any Root repops around when that movie was made.

I especially like the Carbine look of it with the shortened forestock. Ive never seen another one like that. Every other Root Revolving Rifle ive seen has the full length Musket-style forestock.

The gun was from Stembridge Gun Rentals in Hollywood

Remember Jim Bowie's multi-barrel flintlock carbine or whatever it was supposed to be, from 'The Alamo' resurfaced in 'The Young Riders'. Strange how some of the odd ball weapons make the rounds in the movies.
The first step of becoming a good shooter is knowing which end the bullet comes out of and being on the other end.
