I really need to go see her again.I met Julia Parker around twenty years ago.I have always been interested in native american tools and such and there was a small pow wow at a local catholic church.Mrs Parker had a booth there and was showing different things about acorns and such.People were strolling through and i saw this stone bowl with water in it and asked about it.She said it was used to make bow string,i asked water for bow string? She replied yes to soften the fibers.
She them proceeded to show me a dried tule (tu-lee)plant stem, she smashed it with her thumb and finger and peeled back the bark ending up with a length of fiber. She showed me how to split it,wet it and braid it together for string. She did a little bit and handed it to me as people kept coming by and looking and leaving. She told her friend she had to take a break and left for about 30 minutes.I had found a chair and sat down, when she came back, she said "is he still here"???
Her friend said "yes, "he's been here ever since you left and has a nice length of string".I showed her and she was impressed i guess and told me that sometimes the men would bundle the fibers and run them down thier legs with the palm of the hand and twist them together, she said,"don't do that, makes weak string, always braid it".She then invited me to a private pow wow at her place later in the year, she even gave me a code word for when i got there to get in.I have always regreted not being able to make that trip as i was working for my dad and had to work weekends.
I think of her alot and never forget that day, just standing next to her calmed me down. She writes books about such things and i guess she is still up there teaching,a very incredible lady!!!If ya go to Yosimite go see her,you will never forget it.I need to go up and see her again!!Thanks for reading my story. Now watch Julia in action~~

Why thank you.

Oh, wait....you weren't talkin' about me, were you?

I'll go read the original message and get back to you.
People like me are the reason people like you have the right to bitch about people like me.

Forty Rod

You need to go now.  No telling how much longer she'll be around.

I've missed so many in my own past because I didn't know THEN to record things for NOW.  No way to go back after they have passed on.
People like me are the reason people like you have the right to bitch about people like me.

We very often get just a brief second or two to meet someone. Most people have some bit of knowledge or know a story worth hearing but in our current fast paced world we just barely get to brush by them. Even the real ol' time sit down coffee shop places are dying out. If I ever get to retire I'd like a campfire to sit around and flag people down, maybe it would work?
Yes, I do have more facial hair now.
