I have read that Frank was a Remington man. He turned in a Remington when he surrendered

Montana Slim

I speculate the James boys were intimately familiar with all the contemporary firearms of the day  ;)

Some rumored evidence that Jesse prefered one of the Smith "Top Breaks" as well.

I'd have to believe that by the end of his life, Jesse would have been carrying a cartridge gun of some type.

Are you one of the advocates that say Jesse lived to be in his 80s and died in Kansas?

If you're asking me, IMO Jesse James was killed by Bob Ford. The in photo I've seen with Ford holding the gun that killed Jesse, it was a SAA. As far as I'm concerned Jesse James was just another robbing murderer and got what he deserved

Saw a documentary years ago that concluded Jesse James couldn't have lived since his family was destitute in the after years. With all his criminal activity, supposedly he was a family man and never would have have let them suffer the way they did. (I'm such a history nerd)  :)

Very good point.

I'm sure that Jesse started his career in crime with a cap and ball revolver - you simply have to consider the dates.  He was in trouble from the time he joined Anderson's gang during the civil war.  If accounts I've read are accurate, he carried a multitude of C&B's on his person during that time frame, just like any guerrilla with a lick of common sense did.  And I'm equally confident that he didn't throw them away afterwards.  Consider the potential difficulties early on in supplying ammunition for the new-fangled cartridge guns.  The really amazing thing is the fact that he lived long enough to make the transition from Cap and Ball to cartridge guns.

Fiddler Green

A rare picture of Jesse James with a Colt 1851, 1860 (?) in his lap and one in his belt. Jesse was known to like Colts while his brother, Frank, was a Remington guy.
