I'm not a general, but I've known some and also some career officers who I thought were going to make general, but didn't  because of politics. You might get to be a BG without playing too much politics (in the particular service), but above that and especially at 3- and 4-star rank, you are in up to your topknot.  It goes with the territory.  It's a shame, but that's reality.

It's not just the top ranks that are made by kissing the back side of your commander. I was told to keep my mouth shut several times so that I could just make E-5. I did how ever make E-4 the hardest way you can. The answer to that is I made it twice. Later David
