I load up a little "sawed off" 40 S+W to shoot in my Volcanics.

I am able to get as much as 3.5 grains of "Power Pistol" behind a 155 grain Bullet, and 4 grains behind a 140 grain, for volicities between 800 to 975 FPS. This stuff sure does burn dirty.

I have tried "Bullseye", but this stuff shows signs of excessive pressure and still burns dirty.

I hear there are cleaner burning powders out there. Any of you Guys re-load with light loads and get clean burns?

Down in "Frontier Iron", Drydoc, recomended "American Select".
I didn't know there was such a blend, might give it a try.

Any other favorites out there?

tightgroup is as clean as Ive found. I shoot it in a 45lc. mostly because it lasts so long tho. just my 2c. DR

I dunno what kind of pressure limits you have with the Volcanic, but it has been my experience that yes, you need some pretty serious pressures to get either TB or BE (or most any smokeless) toreally burn clean.  Lemme put it this way, if the cases won't seal, you don't stand a prayer of a clean burn because of lost gas pressure limiting the burn progression......  Now, GETTING yer short cases to seal might be an issue IF they are shortened enough so yer getting into the thick meat of the case, where the case mouth is thicker than it was.....  Might need to anneal the cases????

In my experiments with Cowboy .45 Special, using my light 125 grain bullet I WAS able toget both BE and TB to burn so clean you couldn't see any evidence on the outside of the cases, and in the instance of TB, even the insides were near pristine, but that was probably in the mid 20s pressure range....

That's some good insight Jack.

How much pressure my Volcanics can tolerate depends on what metal I use.

20,000 PSI is too much for "Navy Brass".
Aluminum Bronze will handle it, but brings up construction problems.

I have to ream the inside of the case in these very short cartridges, so the wall is thin enough to seal.

Those powders you mention, TB or BE ? - News to me, I will have to look em up.

By the way, I like your "45 Special", I appreciate Guys that dare to go into new territory.
I made up some "450 Adams" once, and a single shot to shoot um.
So you are my kind of Guy ;D

Trail Boss and BullsEye  ;)   700X might be a good candidate as well.
