Hello guys. I been putting the bullet caddy together using Jim Simmons patterns. I can't get the space thats between the 2 leather to fill up. I sanded the side after I sewed the 2 pieces together. Died them. Been using Gum Tag to burnish with. What else to help make it flat on the side. Got to lay down, but will check back friday nite after work to further this conversation..

When I've had this problem, I'll put a couple coats of Tan Kote on, and when dry burnish over that with bees wax to take some of the glossiness off.I've had some hides that no matter what I tried, the nape wouldn't lay down, using Tan-Kote is my last result with hides like this, and these were high quality hides, I don't know what causes this to happen, but it does from time to time.

If you have not tried it yet give some glycerin saddle soap a shot. I have a chunk cut off the main bar that after getting the leather damp rub that on pretty good. Once it is worked in I use my burnisher to shape the leather and if you want get it to a nice shine. After that I use bees/paraffin wax mix and a canvas rag and burnish it some more.

Hope that helps.

Are you having a problem with the two pieces showing a gap after burnishing? I had the same problem when I hand stitched holsters before I started gluing the two pieces together before stitching. I would use heavy coats of Fiebing Edge coat or heavy beeswax on the edge then burnish the heck out of it. That got me out of a jamb allot of times. Gluing the leather pieces before stitching eliminates the problem altogether. Or at least it did for me!

Reverend

Amin,

Yes thats the problem. I got mad enough last nite I was eyeing some shower & tile calk today at Lowes lookin for something for my crews.

Well before you caulk the edges of your bullet caddy, let me suggest some contact cement. At least thats what all pros on this forum told me to use. You might want to try the edge coat or beeswax though since you already got the two pieces stitched up. If it is a wide gap, where you can put an applicator between the two pieces, then some contact cement can be used. Coat both pieces, let set for 15 to 20 min. an push em together. Then re-slick. If any glue gets on exposed edge, you may need to sand it off with a little sand paper. I think we got you headed in the right direction though! Take care Reverend. Let us know how it turns out for ya!

what amin said... that should fix ya up just fine.
Them's great instructions amin. ;)

Ned.

Well I finally got the thumb healed. Had to have it cut back open & the stich that sewed up the vein had to be removed. I told Doc I could have done that & if I had a problem with it I could get on the Cas City Leather Formum somebody would have helped me. I been down a couple of times with the knees. They sent me to a Surgeon. The same one that repaired me from the broken pelvis & left hip socket. I have had 4 knee surgeries. He says I have the knes of a 85 year old man. Thats what 30 years of climbing poles will get you. I 'm having double knee replacement the 17th of August. I been busting my hump finnishing the remodeling the house & getting moved into my new leather & reloading shop. Just got to start on the U/G service next weekend. Working on the New Cowboy town(Tulsey Town Cattlemens Assoc) I designed & started building last year. I'm just about wore smooth out. The Doc said I will be off for 4 months min. I don't plan on doing nothing but leather & reloading. I think I have Kat talked into helping me get the used Golf (I just bought cart) ready . It will just right to get around the Trap & skeet ranges.
