Hi, I'm just getting ready to get ready for the sport. I've got an 1894 (modern) Marlin , but hate their buckhorn rear sight. I knew that going in, so I purchased a ghost ring set-up, but I've heard they can be fragile under CAS conditions. Not sure I want to go the tang sight route (Lyman or Marbles?) for a back-up, just yet. Can those stock buckhorns be opened and top flattened and remain legal for competition ?

Yes it's legal to flatten them.  My '73 has the rear site flattened and I love it!

Howdy Fence and Welcome. Yep, what Camille said. Alota of the top guns use a flattop rear and a .130 Grabber front sight for quick target aquisition, even helps us slow pokes with our old eyes. I had the smith cut down the buckhorns when he installed the Grabber. Before you spend a bunch of money on guns and gear do yourself a favor, start going to a bunch of matches, most folks are more than willing to let you try thier gear. Good Luck.

If I recall correctly, Marlins come with a stock Marbles semi-buckhorn rear sight. A full buckhorn comes around almost full circle. Marbles makes three versions of this sight, the Full Buckhorn, the Semi Buckhorn, and the Flat Top. You might just want to buy a Flat Top and install it without going to the trouble of cutting anything down.

Personally, I really like a semi-buck horn and have them on several of my rifles.

PS: Don't forget to either black out the white diamond, or turn it around. It ain't legal with the white diamond showing.
That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!
