Ended so happy with the peep sight I Acraglassed on top of my dust cover on my '76 50-95 that I removed my Marble tang sight and put another one on my '76 .40-60! Ill run it to the range and zero it in and post the results. Had trouble with the tang sight hitting my thumb on recoil, now it wont be an issue. These peep sights are made for 96 Mauser rear sight replacements and sell for under 20 bucks. They are adjustable for windage, but not elevation. If you need to adjust elevation, it can be done by replacing the front blade with a taller or shorter one, although I didnt have to touch the one on the .50-95.

Looks like a neat set up.  That's what I  call thinking outside the box! :)

Not trying to be an AH, but isn't that a "receiver sight" and unacceptable for CAS matches?  How about an unallowed external modification?

I like the idea and if it IS legal, I may just start adding it to some of my own guns, but I gotta know for sure.

I think that is a neat idea for a hunting arm.  I'm almost sure it isn't match legal, but a quick removal and you're GTG.

OTOH.  Is the model 21 sight period correct?

PS;  It appears that it dates to 1895, so the question might be whether it was commonly available?

Barrel Mounted Rear Peep Sight is SASS Illegal
QuoteRear sights must either be open iron sights mounted on the barrel or original style tang or stock wrist mounted peep sights. Long range rear barrel mounted sights of the flip-up ladder type may use a peephole drilled through the sliding sight leaf. An example of this is the various ladder type sights used on the Springfield trapdoors.

"...original style tang or stock wrist mounted peep sights."

That is pretty specific, and rules out the #21, as well as Evodude's clever sight arrangement; - at least for competition.

Well, the usefulness of the 1876 does not begin and end with SASS,  Lots of other venues for shooting the 76 - including hunting! ;D

Sass rules are not worth worrying about for most things.  Its a very narrow, and often boring, game they play.  Having said that (and not to be cruel or anything) while the glued on sight might work OK, it aint what I would call pretty.  I think I would rather go with a good tang sight.  Of course, finding such a thing for the 76 might be something of a challenge.  Axtell maybe?

My dislike of the tang mounted sight is that my big hands take a beating from it from hefty recoil. Looks bitchin, but in my case, I had to make a thick leather 'thumb boot' to keep the skin on my thumb web! Gotta realize this isnt a barrel mounted peep- its mounted on the dust shield, and works the same in both closed and open possition. ANYWAYS------ as promised, Ill give you my range results! Shooting both Triple 7 and 4198 loads, it grouped 4 inches high at 50 yards, and 2-4" to the right. I was able to correct the windage through its adjustment, but for elevation Ill have to put the target on top of the front sight. I usually cover the bullseye with it, but I think it wont really be an issue so changing out the front sight isnt necessary. it seems to have the same impact at 100 yards as well. I thought for sure it wouldve dropped a bit but it's negligable. And its NOT GLUED ON!! Its Acraglassed! That stuff is as strong as silver solder- Ive glassed ribs on shotguns, and a front sight on my .35 Whelen Improved, with zero failures. I cant speak highly enough about that miracle goop!! Anyways, just thought Id share a very functional idea with all you pards out there!

I recognize the problem with having the tang sight right where you want to put your hand, I have the same issue.  As for Acraglass...its an epoxy, which means its a glue.

evodude

Oh MY GOD Roscoe thanks for straightening us all out on that- I always thought it was a 'nylon adhesive polymer'! Ill try to upload a pic of an '86 with same sight design for all to view.

OKDEE

Looks like you did a neat clean job.  Pretty different and out of the box thinkin!  ;D

Roscoe Coles

And hey, at least the next guy to own it can get it off without much damage to the gun, so I guess the glue has that going for it. ;D

evodude

Thats the reason I Acraglassed it on and didnt drill and tap it. In the event I ever do sell it, (not likely, too much fun to shoot!!) I can remove the dust cover and heat it up with a heat gun and pop it off. Clean up is easy, the great GLUE remover, vinegar ! No damage to the shield at all. What did you think of the reciever sight on that 1886? I believe it is a pretty old set up.

evodude

Well, as promised, heres the range report. Ended up changing out the front sight for a Marbles .450 brass bead to bring the groups down. they were high at 50 yds, and higher at 100 yds! This sight puts them at the right elevation at 50 yds. Played with Lyman 200 grn, Lyman 240 grn. and a 250 grn round nose thats also out of a Lyman mould, just dont know the number. Bought em from Western Bullet. Best 5 shot group was with the 250 grn and 40 grns by volume of Triple Seven fff. BUT, it was a dismal 4" and I think itll do better than that. Didnttry grouping at 100 yds yet. ???
