Henry Question

Just received my 1860 Henry in 44/40.  I noticed that in the buttplate there is a compartment.  I would think that the compatment is for a cleaning rod etc and not for spare ammo.  If this is true, where would I get a cleaning rod for the Henry?

Yup! Segmented cleaning rod.  You could probably substitute (part of) a GI cleaning rod intended for the M-1 Garand butt trap, but I'm fairly certain either Dixie or S&S has a replica of the original.

I've heard that before....wonder if the compartment could be made larger with proper application of a power tool .

(I used a hand-drill w/spade bit on my Sharps rifle with good effect some years ago to make a "lead compartment". Should be able to do some damage it with that, right?

If the but-stock hold bolt goes 'thru the same hole (and I think they have seperate holes, but I'm not sure) you'll need to shorten the bolt as much as the hole is lengthened, then the threads re-done, but that's about a 5 min. job.  It'll take longer to find the right size threading die than doing the work!

exactly, the stock on the Henry is held by the two screws through the tang and two more through the floor plate under the lever.

You can enlarge the hole but use a Forstner Bit.... If your cleaning rod is the correct 4 pieces they are only  6 1/2 " and should fit the hole already.
The hole in my Henry is just over 8".
