Help! Splitting leather

I have some really nice WC leather that I would like to split down to about 4 ounces.
My local shoe repair person let me use his old splitter and it tore up the leather into a big mess.
Is there anyone out there who can split a 6 inch wide strip for me, or possibly trade with me?
