Dances With Coyotes

For the last couple of weeks Ive been reading everything I could get my hands on when it came to BP. Have spent countless hours lurking in the Darksiders Den and have read every page. Today Im goin to send my order off for one of Dicks molds (.45,250 gr) and try my hand at casting my own. Also going to send an order off to Starline for brass. Im no stranger when it comes to BP. My only experience has been with ML's and capn'balls, and the only casting Ive ever done is for RB's and R.E.A.L. bullets. I have a SS 1873 Cimarron in .45 that I plan on loading for. Right now just trying to get my stuff together and wanted to say HI to you guys.

Thank you, Just to clarify Dick your molds don't come with the handles, right? I ordered the handles anyway. As soon as I run to the post office my order will be on its way. Is there going to be a handle for the sprue cutter? like on the pic? Or is that something I have to add myself. This is also my first time to cast with anything bigger than a 2 cavity mold.....but I think I can,I think I can, I think I can.......Also been reading up on the pan lubing too. But figger I gotta have some boolits first. Gonna lube my own and run them through a LEE sizer kit. Then load on a Dillon 550 but I'm gonna scoop the powder as I'm going. Havent' done much researching on the drop tubes. Some say yay, some say nay for the revolvers. I know its a neccessity on BPCR's. How would I set something like a drop tube up on a Dillon 550 on the bell and powder charge die? The Lyman powder measure No. 55 is a little pricey for me. Also unsure about using either wads or the punch outs from milk cartons. Some guys do, some don't. Thinking bout just running with the 50/50 beeswax and Crisco for the lube.....but first things first, I needs me some boolits.

Well, Sir, you're starting smart by starting with Big Lube Boolits.  They will save you 99% of the hassles associated with (ignorant) black powder shooting.  The remainder of the problems will be eliminated if you THOROUGHLY clean any dinosaur juice from your gunz before attempting to shoot black powder in them.  I lube my pistols with Mobil 1 Wheel Bearing grease and use Mobil 1 motor oil in the rifle when needed.

Welcome to black powder shooting.  After a couple of matches, you'll no longer understand why anybody would shoot anything else.

Dick Dastardly

Howdy Pard,

Since the tong handles fit all the Six Cavity Professional molds, They are not included in the price of the mold cuz lots of pards prefer to move handles from one Six cav mold to another rather than buy a set for each mold.

The sprue cutter handle is an integral part of the Big Lube®LLC mold assembly.  Each Big Lube®LLC mold includes a sprue cutter handle in the mold price.

Further, the Big Lube®LLC handles, both tong and sprue, are fitted to laser cut steel parts.  Not sintered cast as is the case with previous and other Six cavity handles.  We have yet to have a Big Lube®LLC handle snap off.  The wood is secured by a high temp elastic adhesive and they don't loosen up and fall off like others.  The ferrules on Big Lube®LLC are swaged solid brass hydraulic hose type.  Their extra support is welcome in heavy continuous use.  The prices have not been increased.

Hope this helps.

I got the mold and handles today. Very , very nice quality. You were right bout those handles. Not as cheesy feeling as the LEEs.  Very nice mold. I'm planning on doin a 20:1 ratio of pure to tin. That sound about right? I think I'd probaly better wait till I get my brass and BP in before I make up any large batches. After I get my .45 setup next mold I plan on ordering will be for a .44-40 I've had for bout 13 years. I've also got a '51 Navy that's been converted to .38 S&W that I'd like to get fodder set up for it.

That 20:1 ratio may be a bit richer in tin than you need for SASS match shooting, but it'll sure make pretty boolits.  Start looking for some wheel weight metal.  Many pards, myself included, cast bullets from straight WW metal.  Some mix it 50/50 with lead for a slightly softer mix.

One of the things many bullet casters do is look for scrap/waste lead and lead alloy metals.  Your local tire store may have some wheel weights in a bucket that you can buy reasonable.  Lead pipe, electronic/atomic/x-ray shielding, roof flashing and wire sheathing are all good sources of metal.

Good luck,

Actually I don't shoot SASS.....I have lots of lead, both WW and pure. I just like the old stuff. I also have about 100# of Monotype stashed away. Where is a good source of tin? Was reading up on solder and to avoid the 5% copper mix. I know Mono has about 9% tin and will harden my alloy...thought bout using a little (and I do mean a little) of that...

Dick, any plans in the future for a single or double cavity BL mold in the future? I've tried your mold and I liked my results. I need to get the mold hotter though because what I was producing were wrinkled. Next chance I get I'm gonna scrounge me a hotplate to set my mold on. Also eyeballing a 20# LEE pot. Right now I'm using a borrowed LEE 10# r and keeping it filled and heated properly is a little tricky.

Since visiting this site a couple of years ago, I have bought the following with Black Powder in mind, a new Uberti (U-Beauties in Australia) 1873 44/40 rifle with a 24" Octangular Bbl, a 1910 vintage 1892 in 44/40, a 1880 built 1873 saddlering carbine in 44/40, three Pietta 44/40 1873 revolvers ( I carry an extra gun rather than carry spares), a brass framed Texan Pietta cap and ball revolver and a pair of 5 1/2" consecutively numbered Ruger Old Armys as well as 1980s vintage ROA with target sights and 7 1/2" Bbl. Prior to this the BP guns I had were an early 1866 Unerti saddle ring carbine and a 45/70 BPCR Target rifle.

Add to this about 4 or so Big Lube Moulds, a Tower of Power, a pair of Kirst Converter Cylinders for the ROAs, etc, etc, etc, etc!

I'm a bad influence on myself!
