I'm hoping someone can tell me the date, the year rather, that Smith & Wesson first came out with a double action revolver and what caliber. I'm thinking 1881 with a .44-40, but I've seen some conflicting dates, some such as 1873.  I got to wondering watching the movie Billy Two Hats, where Gregory Peck's character is using a DA Smith, but the year isn't set in the movie. It's after the buffalo have been pretty well decimated, so I'm figuring the time frame is the 1880's.

Thanks for the info. Pretty much confirmed what I had thought, good to see someone else has that info!

RR, you'd be amazed at the wealth of information available here.

I am constantly blown away by it.

In that light, should a serial number be too sensitive to put out online - send me a PM - I have numerous references available.
