I have a 7/8 scale Single Action Army and I'm wanting to dovetail the front sight. I'm concerened about the size of the dovetailed sight on the thin barrel as the 3/8 is monsterous.

What size is the Uberti '58 and is that something most gunsmiths are equipted to do?
It just looks like a better fit for me.

thanks

The sight's dovetail is about .350 at the bottom, the base is .065-.070 thick.  The angle is 74 degrees, and the cutter used is a 1/4 inch X 74 degree, available from Brownells, part # 080-621-250, about $30. If a gunsmith doesn't happen to have this particular cutter, it is available from Brownells as a catalog item.

Be aware that the base is chamfered on the sides at 45 degrees to match the Remington's octagonal barrel, but could be reshaped to match the round barrel easily enough, if it looks too odd to your eye.

I installed one on a pard's 1875 blade sighted Remington to match his other that had a post sight, and the 45 degree sides weren't a problem, as the bottom width of the dovetail cut in the round barrel was made to match the width of the sight.

I reshaped the blade sight to match flush with the barrel shape before cutting the dovetail, to avoid having to fill the (longer) blade sight's trench, as the material was already there.
