Howdy Pards,
My father in law brung by a 22 holster that some one made for him about 20 years ago, it is a shame that they didn't treat the leather!!! The holster is carved, and I hope that I can be that good some day???? Anyway the belt is rotten and I am going to make him a new one, but I hate bullet loops, and I have never done 22's and since I hate making 45 colt loops I know that the 22's will be worst!!
Feel free to jump in and tell me how you would do it>
Thanks

Howdy Ace
I've done far too many 22 belts and everyone was a pain to hand sew. If your Father in Law doesn't mine, I would weave them.

Ace, I always use 2/3oz leather in a half inch width for .22s, definitely a choice and not a rule.  For hand sewing I used the four hole diamond punch against a hard resin backboard to prevent opening the holes to much and do not use a continuous pattern, as shown on my cartridge belt slide project.  The lighter leather holds up well enough with 22s and is much easier to work with for hand sewing.

I hate to make 22 loops. I made my own some years ago. IMHO its a joke a 22 isnt that easy to get out of loop and in front of your eyes to load it into whatever. Outside of its kool to look at . For me its far from pratical because when 22's are involved many more shots than a belt will hold will be fired.
I think that an ammo pouch or 2 on the belt would work much better for me and maybe ya Dad.

   Howdy Ace

I hate 22 caliber bullet loops, and won't fool with them, I can carry a whole box of 22's in my pocket, which are 200% easier to get too, you could just make him a belt and a small pouch to carry his bullets in, my experience with those that have the loops for 22 cal, tend to leave the bullets in the loops, because they're such a pain to get in and out, which over time creates and causes VERDIGRIS, I know personally, about dealing with this stuff, and it's a lot of work to get it removed , I'd stay away from making loops for 22, just my opinion.

Howdy Pards,  :)
I agree with you all, I think I will just make the belt and he can do what he wants for the bullets!
Thanks so much!

I'm glad you asked this Ace! I am faced with the same issue on two belts I am making for my kids. Think I'll go with Hatfield's idea of a pouch instead of loops. I like that idea a lot! If I can avoid hand sewin all them loops I'm gonna.  ;D

I get folks asking if I carry ones with 22 lR loops all the time.  I agree with you on easier to carry in a pocket and besides if we ar talking 22LR they are outside lubed and will gather dirt on a loop.  Can be hard on barrels depending on how gritty the soil is in your area.

As a possible option, here's a cartridge box I made years ago. It was formed over a block of wood and will take two boxes of 22 Long Rifle. As you can see, it's had plenty of use.

Something like that would be perfect for both my boy's rigs. I like that a lot Marshal. I am gonna have to set down tonight and get to work on some patterns for one. Thanks for sharin that. I was worried about doin the belt loops on there belts. A pouch would be a lot more user friendly for kids. Thanks again Marshal.
