What is the best finish to put on them when done?
I have an old blowing horn of my grandpas from the coon hunting days, and it is seeming a bit dry. Is there a good thing to put on them?

Dr.Bob, it's cow horn.KT sent me a couple of pics he liked. One had a similar tack pattern on a light colored horn and the other was a carved dark horn that he liked. I just  tried to combine the two somewhat. After carving and sanding I heated the horn with a propane torch just to get warm and then dyed with Fiebing's dark brown dye until I liked it.then buffed it, applied Leather Sheen, then buffed again. Then,I started the tacks.Dave ;D

Not a horn, but a powder flask.  I made this a couple of years ago from one of those bones at Petsmart.   I have seen bone flasks going back to the 16th century.

Had my pal with me when I bought the bone.  Guy at the counter asked me if I had another dog.   Nope, just this one.   (bone was longer than my little guy.  He still wanted it though)

Dalton, I use potassium permanganate. I mis the crystals in water. Same stuff at the pard referring to old bones, but I use a much stronger mixture.
If it is dry, PM is an oxidizer and may add to it.

Good Luck, Doc

I draw lines on the horn of course.  ::) Pencil then add to it like a "paint by the numbers".
