Best source for new wood on an older 1876

I have an older 1876 (mfg 1878). It's a standard model with the half mag and round barrel. Some one 'restored' it some time back so it's no longer an original. The work included replacing the stocks with some less than spectacular wood with a very modern stain and finish. I'd like to replace the stocks with some better wood and fitted better than was done on the current wood (lots of plastic wood to fit the metal).

Can any one recommend some one who can make a good stock and knows how to fit it to the rifle? I'm not looking for some super custom job as the rifle doesn't warrant that kind of money but I would like something that looks more like it's from the 1800s than from a disco shop in 1974.  I'd also like to get a NWMP type carbine butt and plate while I'm at it as the original shotgun butt plate was over sanded and then stippled with a punch (yech).

These folks make a good stock for a fair price.  http://www.precisiongunstocks.com/index1.html

This gent will make and fit a stock of any grade you need.  More money, but good work.

In addition, the stocks from the new Uberti 76 will fit your original. :)

You mentioned the stocks from the new Uberti 76 will fit your original. Does that mean the original butt plate will fit to? Thanks

Hi Walter.

I have not tried to interchange the butt plates, so I really don't know.  I do know that Winchester used two different butt plates on the 1876 - one with a longer heal toe than the later version.  The Uberti 76 uses the second version. :)  The Uberti 76 butt plate also has the trap door and it drilled for the cleaning rod.

It just so happens that I have a forearm and buttstock for the 1876 rifle, for sale.  These are reproductions and not originals.
If you are interested, I could send you a picture of two.  Pretty good quality, but probably will require a bit of fitting.

Cheers,

Thanks for the offer Oaklahoma Dee but I need to get some one to do the work of fitting it. I'm great working with metal and plastic but I can't cut wood to save my soul. I'd turn any stock into blood soaked firewood in no time.

I'd also really like to go with the carbine butt plate. I think that I'll try an Uberti butt plate and then go to Treebone for the wood. I've heard of him many years ago.
