 Been doing some reading ( I know ,,,dangerous,,right) on which type of metal's or steel's to use for machining toggle links and other parts for (1876 chappies) my own personal use,,,YEP,,confussed so here I are,,,"COFFINMAKER", and other machinist all input and advise,excepted .

I'v always belived "if man made it,,man can fix it,,,if GOD MADE IT,,LEAVE IT ALONE"....

Just a few ideas below. These materials are frequently used on firearm components.
I also strongly suggest you research these in depth before proceeding.

You will need to consider  - do you have the ability to heat treat the metal...?

If so, 8620 would be a good choice. Machine to your final dimensions and then case harden & temper.

If not, consider 4130, but must buy already heat treated somewhere in the 36-42 Rc range.
This isn't terribly difficult to machine, but you'll likely need good cutting tools, carbide, or possibly ceramic.

Slim,,sorry for not getting back sooner,,,,,,been tied up w/ my sister died w cancer after 1 1/2 yr. battle,,she's at peace now.

Thank you for the advice,,been reading up on different metal's.Yes I can heat treat. Bought a used mini mill & lathe,,been playing with it some .I am going to make extra parts for my "chaparral-76",,,just in case,,. Read up on shock absorber rod's,,hardness in the heighborhood of hrb70-85 ,,to mill down for 5/32 link pin's,, and maybe fireing pins,any thoughts would be a big help. And yes sir,,been check'n on 4140 also.
