Discussion in another thread got me to thinking (which is almost always dangerous)...

...is there any evidence that anyone during our time period ran any kind of shooting schools or training?

I've read that there were schools to teach you the proper way of dueling in New Orleans but that source didn't document it. I also think it's safe to assume that the Army taught it's soldiers to shoot in certain ways. Other than that, though, has anyone heard of any formalized training - maybe for Eastern dudes coming West on vacation or something like that? Or maybe some of the big cities had shooting ranges...

St. George

No.

And the New Orleans reference likely came from a Louis L'Amour novel where the hero's mad skills were learned from much-vaunted masters - I believe done in a darkened room...

During the era, men were expected to 'know' how to shoot.

Pretty much every city and many established towns also had shooting galleries - but those were for entertainment purposes, and came about much later in time.

There was a 4H club in Montana that I thinked adopted our rules. You might want to ask GW about it.
Don't get excited about the light at the other end of the tunnel. (It might be another train.)
