So now that my '58 remmie is coming to me in the mail today I decided to stick with just shooting BP and not doing the cartridge route, so what all do I need to load, clean etc...? links would be most welcome.

Bunch a ole scudders!

RemingtonEric

Do they sell just the kit by itself? I already have my '58 and I will be buying another one just not soon enough.

I recommend buying the individual accessories you like best. For me, I like period-style flasks. You'll also need a nipple wrench, some .454 RB, powder & caps. I buy as many supplies locally as possible..however, I can't get the caps I need locally & have to mailorder.

I use an old squeeze-bottle for my over-ball lube (crisco + a lttle beeswax)

I assume you have a pistol cleaning rod, a toothbrush, .45 jag and bore mop for cleanup.

Slim

STOP . . . . I bought the Cabelas "Starter Kit" for my first '58.   The balls supplied are too small a dia.    (  ie.  .451 dia. )  They quickly leaded the bore which I later found to be .454 and accuracy went all to H . . L in the first 6 rounds that I fired.   You can get good suppies from Cabelas.  Get balls of at least .454 dia.  I use the .457 dia. balls.  Lyman ones is what I get.  I get caps from the local gun shop.  Powder from "Powder Inc."   They'll ship it to your door.  5 lbs for about $ 90.00   They don't ship less than 5 lbs.  Local suppies of powder are iffy.  But you can usually get "Pyrodex" somewhere by the pound.  It is not classed as an "exploseive" and shops carry it that don't bother with real black powder.  Pyrodex is "black powder" but has been treated to make it more stable and so it is a "propenlant" rather than and "explosive".  CCI no. 11 caps work good on the factory nipples on my Pietta '58s.  But just get one package of caps and try 'em.  You may need no 10s and some folks prefer other brands.  Lube . . I use a 50/50 mix of olive oil and toilet bowl wax.   Cleaning . . I use Weasil Piss.   Some prefer Moose Milk, . . or Mule Snot . . . Do you have a moose ? Mule ? Weasil ?
Beware the man with one gun, he probably knows how to use it.

You probably don't have access to either moose or mules. . .

Warning . . .
Them Wheesils is slippery fast little devils and catching one was quite a chore.   I thought the worst was over when I had a firm grip on him, . . . . . but, . . holding him down while I pried his mouth open and got the funnel in wasn't any easier.   After the first two bottles of beer inserted into the upper end of his elementary canal he began to produce the desired product.  And by the third bottle things got much easier as he'd discovered that he like the stuff I was pouring into his gullet.  Now he can't get enough of it.  He turns up his nose at domestic beer and will only drink good imported stuff, . . . British and French are Ok with him but is preference is for German brews.  The end product is being pumped out at a great rate.  I have considered getting a bottling set up and marketing it . . . . but unfortunately the marketing of "cottage ( ie. garage ) produced products" on the SASS wire has been banned.  You'll just have to catch yur own Wheesil . . . .  ::)

If'n ya want to do it "easy way" with the artificial "Wheesil Whiz" ya just mix equal parts Murphy's Oil soap, Hydrogen Perozide, and rubbing alcohol, . . . works good, . . . just not quite as exotic as using genuine "Wheezil Whiz" . . .  :)

That's a negative attitude  :o    Getting started in Black Powder Cap & Ball shooting should be a PLEASURE  :)  The only difficulty I had was that my pistol wouldn't shoot worth a damn after the first two wonderful shots.  ( Which got me HOOKED on Black Powder and Remingtons for EVER ).   It took a week or more on the wire to find out that the bore was leaded.  And then an evening with vinigar and a bronze bore brush to clean it out. And to learn not to use petroleum based oils on a gun that will be shot with black powder.  I used "Farmer John Brand" lube back then  ( ie. hog lard ) and it does work great, . . but is messy in warm climates. Switched to the 50/50 olive oil and toilet bowl wax which is not near so messy.

Yur gonna have FUN   :)

Its the money thing in this economy that sucks, and yes I am going to have loads of fun I can't wait :) just hearing stories of people shooting Cap & Ball has got me hooked
