Uberti 45-75 Chamber Dimensions
« on: February 09, 2010, 10:36:23 AM »
Good Afternoon All,

I'm new to the forum, but have been lurking for some time; thanks for all the great information I've gleaned from the collective knowledge found on this site.

I have a question regarding the Uberti 45-75 chamber dimension issue that has been addressed so often.  Has Uberti corrected the chamber dimension discrepancy on it's newer barrels, or have they decided to stick with the slightly larger capacity dimension chamber?  I purchased a 45-75 from Taylor's last year, and after firing twenty rounds of Ten-X ammo through it, discovered my rifle has one of the incorrect chambers.  Being a handloader, I can live with this, but I really would prefer to have the historically correct cartridge for my rifle.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.  I'm anxious to get my rifle up an running; it's a beauty!

Thanks,
Danny

Martini450:
I sure wouldn't worry about the extra capacity.  My rifle is one of those with the "incorrect chamber" sizes.  I sent RCBS two fired cases and they made me a "Trim and File" die to those dimilnsions.  I gained about 5 or so grains of case capacity.  Talk to Grizzly Adams and he will probably tell you the same thing with a '73 that he has and the original 76's may behave this same way but I don't know about that for sure.  Besides now I can snuggle in 76 grains of Swiss 11/2 BP and a card.  Lots of smoke bang and fun!  So, for what it is worth, don't worry about it, get a trim die made and just neck size your cases.  Be sure to anneal them after your first firing if you want them to last. ;)
When in doubt, mumble!

Thanks for the input Larryo.  I'm starting to lean towards doing exactly what you're suggesting.  The situation is, I took the rifle back to Taylor's several months ago (I live in Virginia), thinking this would be a simple matter of them ordering a replacement barrel and switching it out.  As a lot of people on this forum are aware, Uberti has been taking a very long time getting things shipped, so I've been in limbo for quite some time.  Now, after checking out all the posts on this website, I'm not even certain that when the new barrel comes in, it will even have the "correct" chamber dimensions.  If Uberti has made the change, then I may as well wait a little longer, but if not, I'm itching to burn some powder!

Incidentally, Tammy and the folks at Taylor's have been great to work with on this.  I don't want anyone to take this as a complaint about them; they're at Uberti's mercy.
