44 Colt caliber question

Would you recommend .44 Colt in an 1858 conversion to a first time shooter?

Pretty broad inquiry.
Doubt you'd have difficulties shooting it...but it would help if we knew specifically if your questions go beyond pulling the trigger. Remington NM Army revolvers are sturdy and accurate. I would not rate them the easiest / quickest to handle (for me at least), but they have style points. Will you be shooting black powder or the other stuff & do you plan to load your own ammo. Also, is this a 45-bore, or true 44-bore cartridge you'll be shooting? FActory cartridge conversion or are looking at a conversion "kit" cylinder?

Most repo 58's have a bore of .451.
So to fire .44 Colt if your using a Kirst converter in .44 Colt (a special order item) you would need to load cartridges  with hollow base or heealed bullets.
IMO there is not enough wall thickness in the barrel to line the bore for a true .44 bullet.
.44 Colt with healed bullets would be a Historicaly Correct cartridge for a Remington conversion.

The plan is to start shooting .44 Colt "cowboy loads" such as Black Hills Ammo. Jay Strite of Ravens Roost Custom has .44 Long Colt listed as one of the chamber offerings. Hope that narrows it down.

The Uberti 1858 .44 C&B can be lined to shoot .44 Colt or .44 Special inside lubed bullets with .429 dia. No problems.

"First time shooter", if you are truly so these answers may be confusing to you and your question should be answered with a no its not very good for beginners.  Without more information it would seem that you are wanting to use a gun with a 45 cal barl to fire 44cal ammunition in.  The easy thing is to visit a spell and lets be sure what you have, or plan on having, and figure how that will work out with what you actually want to have.  If you do not already have your conversion unit, 45Colt is the easy way by far for a beginner unless?  Do you already have your '58 and are now looking for a conversion or is it a made up set you are looking at?
