When did mule ear boots become "common"?

My understanding is about the middle 1880's, I don't think they were as common as they are today among "cowboys" but neither is many things we use in our portrayals.  But they are cool looking and that is what most want.  Most of us over dress and over equip, but then the whole idea is to have fun.
