Hello!
Does anyone have any opinions in the difference in quality, if any, of the campaign hat offered by River Junction Trade Company and the one offered by Eureka Arsenal?  I think it's time for a reasonably correct campaign hat, and I'm not willing to spend $300 for one.  Thanks!

Well, I got the one in my profile years before CAS at an Army Navy Store ... I think I paid $3.50 for it ....
My moniker is my great grandfather's name. He served with the 2nd Florida Mounted Regiment in the Civil War. Afterward, he came home, packed his wife into a wagon, and was one of the first NorteAmericanos on the Frio River southwest of San Antonio ..... Kinda where present day Dilley is ...

River Junction doesn't seem to be making the Model 1889 Campaign Hat - Eureka Arsenal's looks true to the original.

As you can see - the 'Fawn' or 'Camel' colors shown in the ads are correct to the era - making the assumption you want one for a Spanish-American War Impression.

Modern-day Drill Sergeant hats' color most resembles 'Burnt Coffee' or even darker - a color that came about at around the Korean War era.

They're also quite rigid when compared to original Campaign Hats of the SAW and WWI periods of issue.

I use the Trooper Hat from River Junction and it is a good wool hat for the price.

I ordered from Eureka Arsenal last year.  I ordered the campaign hat & 1897 cavalry leggings.  I found they were very good quality.  The hat has the correct dimensions for original specs.  The hat ribbon is also historically correct.  It also has the "snowflake" vents on each side.
I hope this helps.

Good Luck with your hat purchase Mr. Neiderlander-I think the hat you already have is great!

For those that want to take a less expensive route:

I bought a like new 4x Beaver Stetson on Ebay for $28 shipped, then wet it, beat it up some and shaped it.

Then saw this picture afterward, confirming I made a correct guess...errr, choice. ;D

Many thanks to Capt Lee Bishop for posting this and other valuable pictures in the "Rough Riders" thread.

That is a "well seasoned" hat.  I have one that is similar, but it is patterned after the Duke's hat in the Cavalry movies and "Rio Bravo".

Tex, you should have been at the muster with it, we could have had an ugly hat contest.

Although mine seems to change shape on it own any more, I'm worried it might get up and walk away some day. ;D
