Navy Arms Schofield problem

One of my Navy Arms Schofields has started to fail to hold the hammer at full cock.  I pulled the side plate and it seems to be slipping off the hammer notch.  There isn't much of a notch.  Is it possible to re-cut the notch or is a new hammer needed?

The gun is about 11 years old and has probably over 3000 rds through it, so I'm not complaining.

Thanks for any help.

The hammer notch can be re-cut - the re-hardening may pose a problem.

Try this:  remove the hammer and sear and stone both of them, to remove any possible burring.

Just don't change any factory angles, and you'll do fine.

While you're at it - look for any other burring - stone it away and clean thoroughly - then re-lube, reassemble and try.

This may be all it needs...

Hope so.

St. George,

Thanks for the info, when I get a chance I'll give it a try.  Any suggestions on re-harding, I saw a post on another board some time back about using a liquid to harden a sear?

Re-hardening is best left to those who are equipped and experienced.

The stoning should merely ensure smoothness  and only that - it shouldn't cut into the actual hardness.

After you deepen the notch, staying at the factory angles, you can reharden it with Kasenit.   Keep in mind, you need the proper file and follow the Kasenit instructions to the letter.  If you doubt your ability to do this yourself, certainly take it to a gunsmith.

Well last week I cleaned the gun very well, then cut the notch slightly deeper with a file and that seems to have fixed the problem.  Tried it at the range this week and it worked fine.

Thanks for the help.

If it feels 'grabby' - use a stone.

A stone will burnish - a file will cut.
