Shotgun Steve

Sixth-plate daguerreotype of a country hunter with powder horn, rifle and some other accoutrements stapped across his shoulder. Written on the reseal is "Reglazed & resealed from the original seal, Flimplast P-90 Archival tape used. JAE, Monticello, IA, 2/9/98. Hallmark Lower Left HB[Eagle] 40." Remnants of the original seal are retained behind the image. Housed in a full leather case.

From a Tintype resale store. I have no date for the photo.

That is an interesting rifle.  I have one with the scroll on the back of the trigger guard like that one but mine also has a finger
rest on the trigger guard below the back trigger.  It has no markings.  I have heard that these caplock rifles with the
non standard trigger guards were made in the 1880's for nostalgia shooting matches.

VEERRY Interesting!  Judging by the double shot-snake on the bandoleer, that is a S x S ML shotgun. The image is reversed, look at the jacket buttons, which I gather is normal for Daguerreotypes.

I've seen single shot-snakes, but the double gives a choice of shot without a lot of fumbling. Neat!

I suppose it's weird but I find myself looking into the eyes of the people in these pix that Shotgun Steve uploads and wondering what those eyes have seen - and how they'd react to the world I live in. I'm sure they'd be in awe of some things and terrified of other things, but I wonder it the things that awed or terrified them the most would match what I'd expect. Conversely I wonder how I'd react if I *really* saw their world.

Well, that's probably enough philosophizing for now...

It is definitely a dbl bbl shotgun.

Very nice.  It might not be reversed though; although the coat has MOST of the buttons on the wrong side, the vest is normal.  Guessing that the subject is right handed, the bandolier/sash is worn normally.  Yup. a double.  Just my 2 cents.
