Approximately 17.5-inches Overall with 13-inch blade...
Exceptional large exhibition Bowie knife by German firm of Luckhaus & Gunther, Remscheid-Haste; false edge; 8-inch double fullers; terrific "gutta percha" (thermoplastic) grips with scales and busts of classical figures on each side; nickel plated counterguard and pommel; blade marked "LUCKHAUS / & / GUNTHER / REMSCHEID" as well as "No. 923" and trademark of a lamb with a cross and flag in a circle; the scabbard is brown embossed leather with a William Morris style repeating pattern, nickel plated tip and throat, embossed frog, frog stud in form of portrait of a woman, writing in black ink on reverse of frog includes "#923." Scabbard in excellent condition; blade has been sharpened. The company was in business circa 1850-1900; Morris-style decoration suggests that this may have been made during '70's or '80's, perhaps later.
